First Communion Season

The Meaning of First Communion

First Communion season is upon us. Many people have gone to the first communion celebrations for their friends and families, but few can recount off the top of their heads all their religious educational teaching of what exactly occurs at a first communion.

For the Catholic Church first communion is considered a sacrament. A Sacrament is something that brings the parishioner closer to God, in which God is believed to be present for. In the Catholic Church, first communion is the third sacrament. The Sacraments are considered as the initiation of a person into the Christian faith, according to the Catholic Church.

The 7 Sacraments

  • 1st Sacrament of Baptism
  • 2nd Sacrament of Confirmation or Chrismation
  • 3rd Sacrament of Eucharist
  • 4th Sacrament of Penance
  • 5th Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick
  • 6th Sacrament of Holy Orders
  • 7th Sacrament of Matrimony

A Little More About Each Sacrament

  • 1st Sacrament of Baptism
  • Holy water flows over the skin and “washes” the physical body clean.

  • 2nd Sacrament of Confirmation or Chrismation
Confirmation got its name because it confirms and strengthens baptismal grace.
  • 3rd Sacrament of Eucharist
The first of these two aspects of the sacrament is called Holy Communion. During this ritual the children eat the bread (body) and wine/juice (blood) of Christ.
  • 4th Sacrament of Penance
This is one of the sacraments of healing, in which a person who has sinned, ie. Becoming more separate from God, may become once again closer as when he was baptized by confessing his sins. There are four elements involved in this sacrament: 1- Contrition: one’s sincere remorse for sin, 2- Confession to a priest, 3- Absolution by a priest, and 4- penance.
  • 5th Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick
This is the second sacrament of healing, in which a priest anoints the sick with blessed oil. One receives the sacrament when they are in danger of dying from illness or old age and may receive it more than once for instance due to a worsening or new illness.
  • 6th Sacrament of Holy Orders
This is the sacrament in which a person becomes a holy person sch as a bishop, priest, or deacon.
  • 7th Sacrament of Matrimony
Marriage, when occurring in the Church is considered a sacrament and is seen as a sign of the love uniting Christ and the Church. It is considered a permanent bond between two people.

First communion then is a symbolic gesture that shows the acceptance of divine grace into a child’s life. It is truly a remarkable thing for those who believe in the nature of the ceremony and rejoice in the ritual.
